Last night our local PBS station aired State Fair Scrapbook. I've seen that special at least once a year for the past decade or longer. A documentary narrated by the late great Dave Moore that was filmed years ago, it captures that place and time. Experts speculate about the future of family farms. State Fair representatives tell us that the Fair displays trends, it doesn't dictate them (which is painfully apparent in the hair and fashions of those Scrapbook ghosts of State Fairs Past).

We've all witnessed the changes at the Fair. We bid goodbye to the old beer gardens and church dining while new buildings, new products, new foods take their place along the Midway and on Machinery Hill. Yet the core of the State Fair remains. The State Fair continues to be a place where we celebrate our state, ourselves, and the seasons of life. For those of us who are super Fair geeks, roaming around the Fairgrounds is like walking a labyrinth: it cleanses us spiritually.
